Significant changes to the Australian federal battery rebate—part of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)—are scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2026.
The federal government is shifting from a flat rebate structure to a tiered system that favors smaller household batteries while reducing support for larger systems.
1. The New Tiered Rebate Structure
Starting May 1, 2026, the number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) a battery can generate will depend on its total capacity. Instead of receiving the full rebate for every kWh, the support will "taper" off as the battery gets larger:
The Bottom Line: If you install a standard 10 kWh or 13.5 kWh (like a Tesla Powerwall) battery, you likely won't see a massive change in the "tier" itself, but larger systems (20 kWh+) will see a significant drop in total funding.
2. Faster "Step-Downs"
Currently, rebate values typically decrease once a year. From May 2026 onwards, the rebate rate will decrease every 6 months.
Pre-May 2026: Approximately $311 per kWh of usable capacity.
Post-May 2026: The base rate is expected to drop to roughly $252 per kWh, with further reductions every half-year until the program ends in 2030.
3. Financial Impact Example
For a homeowner installing a larger 20 kWh system:
Installed in April 2026: You receive the full rebate for all 20 kWh (approx. $6,220).
Installed in May 2026: You receive the full rebate for the first 14 kWh, but only 60% for the remaining 6 kWh (approx. $4,600).
Loss: Waiting until May could cost you over $1,600 for a system of this size.
4. Eligibility Requirements (Unchanged)
While the amount is changing, the core rules for qualifying remain the same:
Capacity: Must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh (though rebates only apply to the first 50 kWh).
Solar Connection: Must be installed alongside a new or existing solar PV system (under 100 kW).
VPP Ready: The battery and inverter must be capable of joining a Virtual Power Plant (though you aren't forced to actually join one).
Certified: Must use a Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved battery and an SAA-accredited installer.
